Vertical Screen Recordings for TikTok, Reels & Shorts

September 4, 2026 · 4 min read

TikTok, Reels and Shorts turned "product demo" into a vertical format, and screen recordings translate awkwardly: your screen is landscape, the destination is 9:16, and naive cropping amputates half the UI. But vertical demo clips demonstrably reach people the landing-page video never will — so here's how to make a horizontal recording work hard in a vertical frame.

The core move: canvas, not crop

Don't crop the recording to 9:16 — place the 16:9 recording on a 9:16 canvas. The recording sits in the middle at readable size, a designed background fills the rest, and captions live in the space below. Every polished vertical demo you've seen in a feed does this; the "background with a floating screen" look is the format.

In DemoReel: Scene tab → Canvas → 9:16. The recording re-frames instantly, backgrounds fill the frame, and the same project can flip back to 16:9 for YouTube — one edit, both deliverables.

The one-edit, many-formats workflow

  1. Record once, landscape, native resolution.
  2. Do the real edit at 16:9 — trims, cuts, zooms, captions, music.
  3. Export 16:9 for YouTube/landing page.
  4. Switch canvas to 9:16, nudge caption size up, re-check each zoom fills the width, export again.
  5. Optionally once more at 1:1 for LinkedIn. Same project file, three platforms.
